►► Download your FREE Midi Drums & Amp Sims Production Checklist: 🤍 This is the most exciting time in history to be a musician. We no longer need to book insanely expensive studio time or collect millions of dollars worth of gear to produce top-notch results for our music. We can do it all OURSELVES within our basements, garages and bedrooms. Midi drum and amp sim software is amazing because it provides us with the freedom to create at our own leisure, anywhere and anytime we want, and without needing to rely on other (often unreliable) musicians. Now, this is all fine in dandy in theory...but if you've been messing with these tools for any length of time, you're probably well aware by now that they don't always produce the same results heard on your favorite records. Often, not even close. Have you ever noticed that you can usually spot midi drums in a home recording a million miles away due to them sounding so damn fake? We all know that many pro producers (more than people realize) use midi drums in their final productions...yet they somehow sound indistinguishable from live drums. How are they doing this??? In this tutorial, I share my favorite technique for making midi drums 10x more realistic-sounding with the simple click of a button. It doesn't matter what DAW or midi drum software you're using... THIS WILL WORK. ►► Frightbox MERCH: 🤍 ► Website - 🤍 ► Facebook - 🤍 ► Instagram - 🤍 All music in video mixed and mastered 🤍 🤍

►► Download your FREE Midi Drums & Amp Sims Production Checklist: 🤍 Mixing midi drums ain't the same as mixing real drums. As much as I love midi drums (half of the projects I'm hired to mix feature midi drums), you can almost never mix them like you would REAL drums. This is an area where so many home studio owners go wrong. Spikey, weird, over-compressed, plasticky-sounding drum tracks all because of this common mixing mistake. The problem is that drum software companies do their best to make these tools sound killer straight out of the box. Because of this, the usual EQ and compression techniques that pro mixers teach in tutorials will often yield disastrous results when applied to your midi drums. So the question is...how should you be mixing your midi drums for the best results? What's the difference between midi drum mixing and live drum mixing? Drums are drums, right? NOPE. Not even close. In this tutorial, I reveal my dead-simple approach to mixing midi drums. I even do a side-by-side comparison of the exact same song mixed with both real drums AND midi drums so that you can see and hear the difference. ►► Practice Mixing RAW Drums by Downloading your free Drum Multitracks: 🤍 I LOVE midi drums. If I'm being frank, I couldn't imagine running my studio without my heavy reliance on programs like EZdrummer. I use midi drums on a near-daily basis for songwriting and pre-production and it makes the process soooo much easier. Also... Almost half of the songs that I mix for my clients utilize midi drums. That's not an exaggeration. A huge chunk of bands choose to skip the drum recording process and rely on midi for budgetary and time-saving reasons and I honestly can't blame them. As much as I love recording real drums, midi drums are so much more convenient. Traditionalists don't like hearing this, but the truth is that programs like EZdrummer can sound just as good as the real thing if you know what you're doing. With all that being said, I've been noticing an all-too-common issue with the mixes that people have been sending me: Most mixes sent to me that feature midi drums sound extremely amateur. Not only can you spot the that the drums are fake from a mile away... But it's blatantly obvious that the mixer has never worked with real drums in their entire lives. Believe me, I get it... Recording live drums not only takes a lot more effort, it also takes more knowledge and experience (as well as a great human drummer to record in the first place). Here's the thing though... Even though this might seem counterintuitive: I've learned that the best (and fastest) way to get good at mixing FAKE drums is to get good at mixing REAL drums. If you think about it, it makes perfect sense. For the most part, we want our fake drums to sound like the real thing and that's not easy to do when you have absolutely no idea what real drums (played by humans) sound like in their rawest form. Fun Fact Many midi drum programs that claim to feature "raw" samples are NOT actually raw...unfortunately🤦🏻 So what should you do if you're limited to only using midi drums, but you wanna get better at mixing? Even if you have no interest in recording live drums, I highly recommend getting your hands on RAW multitracks of live drums to practice you mixing chops with. Luckily, I have something that will help you if you don't know where to start: As a thank you for being on my email list and for being a part of the Frightbox family... You can download a full RAW live drum multitrack of one of my productions to practice your Drum mixing chops (link above!) Click the link above and compare the raw drum tones to your already-polished midi drum program and I think you'll be shocked at the difference. To spice up our MIDI drums, we can use velocities and make small adjustments to the timing. However, that isn't quite enough to make them sound human. We need to add a hint of nuance to our MIDI drums to create the illusion of an actual human behind the kit. When a real drummer plays, they'll have their own style and favourite little habits. Hi-hats offer a great deal of flexibility in terms of how they are played. A drummer can hit the hi-hat in different ways, and the overall sound can be controlled by the foot pedal. How can we use these different hi-hat articulations to create a more human feel with our MIDI drums? Enjoy and thanks for watching! Please subscribe to Brickwall Sounds for more educational content!
