Topic: Nanite Displacement In Unreal Engine 5.2+ In this video we look at how to utilize Displacement Maps in Unreal Engine 5.2+ to produce more detailed Nanite Meshes that can efficently display high quality geometric details. We will go over the steps and workflow to setup and apply displacement maps as well as the settings for producing a fallback mesh if Nanite is not supported. In this video we will be checking out the Substrate Material Examples, in the newly updated content examples project (found on the epic games launcher). This includes Substrate Materials such as the Opal material we saw in the Unreal Engine 5.2 GDC demo. There is a lot of info to break down in the content examples, so I recommend checking out the project for yourself. If you don't know what Substrate is, it's essentially Unreal Engine's new flagship material system. It is set to replace the current system we have. The main difference between Substrate is that you can have layered materials with different shading models, which allow for more realistic results. Today we are going to be checking out Replica Smart NPCs - which is a plugin or add-on for Unreal Engine 5 that allows you to have intractable NPCs that you can talk to, in game. Essentially you speak into your mic, and the AI will generate a response, then voice it over. The NPC uses lip syncing so it looks like they are speaking when the audio is generated.
