What is a monsoon? The word monsoon comes from the Arabic word 'mausim' which translates as 'season', which is suggestive of the seasonal nature of the monsoon and its associated rains. A monsoon climate is characterised by a dramatic seasonal change in direction of the prevailing winds of a region which brings a marked change in rainfall. The monsoon climate results in high annual rainfall totals exceeding 1.5 m (5 ft) in many places. The dynamics that drive the Indian Monsoon and the East Asian Monsoon is the seasonal movement of the ITCZ (Intertropical Convergence Zone) back and forth. In India, the summertime produces the Southwest Monsoon blows in from the Indian Ocean bringing heavy rain, while in winter, the Northeast Monsoon prevails, bringing dry cool winds from the Himalayas. The Indian Monsoon produces the wettest places on earth with Mawsynram and Cherrapunji in Meghalaya State, India, both experiencing more than 12 meters of rain per year. The East Asian Monsoon produces the snowiest places on earth, along the NW coast of Japan when Siberian winds blow across the Sea of Japan in winter, collecting frigid moisture that is then dumped on cities like Sapporo in Hokkaido. The Asian Monsoon has a dramatic effect on the climate of India, the climate of Japan, the climate of Korea and the climate of China. The Climate of Northern Australia is also affected, being opposite to the continent of Asia in regard to the Asian Monsoon. Heavy monsoonal rains across India have triggered floods and landslides, killing as many as 868 people across several states. The season lasts from June to September and wreaks havoc across South Asia every year. The flooding in recent days has seen houses swept away and agricultural crops destroyed in various regions. Millions have been affected, with many stranded in fast-flowing waters. Rescue teams have been deployed to the worst-affected regions. It was raining heavily on the paddy fields. I decided to go for a walk to enjoy the soothing rain and thunder sounds during this monsoon rain. The video totally bring to you the beauty of Kerala during the rainy season. I shot this video from the paddy fields of Edakkattu Vayal during this monsoon rainy season. I wanted to capture the soothing ambience of this heavy rain. The wind was really strong and I was trying my level best to keep the camera steady. What's a monsoon? When you typically hear monsoon used in TV and movies, you think a whole lot of rain! It turns out, that's only half the answer. The meteorological definition of a monsoon is the seasonal reversal of the overall wind pattern in an area. This usually results in a rainy season and a dry season. Monsoons happen all around the world, usually in coastal regions where temperature differences in land and water are enough to cause a shift in the winds. In the Southwest United States, the monsoon season begins in July. Intense heat builds in Arizona and New Mexico and since heat rises, a thermal low pressure system forms at the surface. This low pressure draws air and moisture from the Gulf of California and the Pacific. Then, in multiple waves, thunderstorms form across the desert Southwest and the four corners region, which can lead to flash flooding in an area that rarely sees rain the rest of the year. By September or October, that thermal low begins to break down and winds revert to their usual flow, cutting off any significant chance for rain. At least 11 people were lost, of which 8 were children, seven were injured and several more are feared missing. "Three persons are still suspected to be trapped and the search operation is on to find them," Prabhat Rahangdale from the Mumbai city authority told the Indian Express. "It's an unfortunate incident. It was a G+2 building that fell on another building. Eighteen people have been rescued, of whom 11 died. Police will carry out a proper investigation and take further action," added officer Dilip Sawant. Residents from nearby buildings have been evacuated, considering the situation to be dangerous. Of the injured, one is in critical condition, while the six others were stable and recovering. Mumbai registered 222 mm (9 inches) of rain in a 12-hour period, while tidal waves reached up to 4.6 m (13 feet). Water-logging was reported in various parts of the city, disrupting travel and suburban train services. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport also witnessed a total of four aborted landings. The IMD has issued an orange alert for the city until June 13 and a red alert for the district of Raigad until June 12, as heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected. Unlike much of the rest of the world, with the four reliable seasons of winter, spring, summer and autumn… Thailand has just three seasons…. hot, not-quite-so-hot, and wet. The wet season coincides with an annual tropical monsoon, that forms the overwhelming feature of Thailand’s weather in the late spring, summer and autumn. The rainy season is caused by the southwest monsoon that sweeps out of the Indian Ocean with moist air heading in a north-easterly direction across Thailand, sucked into the void left by rising warm air over the summer Asian continent. The timing of the season isn’t the same around the country and isn’t the same every year although it is reasonably reliable. For example, Chiang Mai doesn’t have the same rainy season as the Gulf of Thailand islands. And Koh Samui’s wet season is month’s after the islands on the other side of the Malay Peninsula. The annual celebration of Songkran, the Thai New Year on April 13, is usually timed to match both the end of the hot season and the start of the annual wet season. But in most provinces the start of the monsoon is usually a month or so later. Some places can be much wetter than others. Ranong, in the south of Thailand, just north of Phuket facing the Andaman Sea, is the wettest province in the country with a rainy season stretching from April to November. But the seaside resort of Hua Hin on the Gulf of Thailand only really has two particularly rainy months, September and October. The strength and intensity of the rains vary greatly. But, generally, monsoon rains tend to be short, intense bursts of rainfall. They could last for a few hours in the middle of the day, but they could just as easily be over within about 15 minutes in the morning or evening. The monsoons do little to stop the locals who are used to just plugging-on, despite the deluges and occasional floods. Help is never too far away with the 20 baht ‘poncho’ available at every 7 Eleven and Food Mart. Flimsy and available in a variety of unfashionable colours, they’ll keep at least some of your body dry if you’re caught out in a downpour. It floods very easily in Thailand, such is the intensity and suddenness of the monsoonal rains. Bangkokians will just roll up their trousers, or hold onto their skirts, take their shoes off and wade through the floodwater. It’s just part of life when living in Thailand. Every year millions of baht are spent to improve drainage and prevent flooding, but nothing seems to make the situation any better. The best thing about Thailand’s wet season is that the rains are never icy cold and usually provide a pleasant respite from the heat. Bangkok and Central provinces The Thai capital generally has a rainy season from late June or early July, peaking in September and starting to dry out in October. It won’t necessarily rain every day and very rarely all day. But sometimes it’s torrential. Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand Chiang Mai is the north capital, mostly flat and surrounded by hills, and attracts plenty of tourists and travellers year-round. The monsoon season lasts longer in the North, compared to Bangkok. It usually starts around May and continues until November. July and August are particularly wet. North East Thailand The Northeast provinces are further away from the Indian Ocean, so the monsoon has lost some of its power by the time it reaches the region. The wet season would stretch from May to October but 80% of the rain usually falls in August and September. The region’s north and eastern borders are the mighty Mekong River which relies on a decent annual fall of rains. In recent years the Mekong has recorded lower levels due to the changes in wet season rains and damming upstream in Laos and China. East Thailand Koh Chang and the other islands off the coast of Trat province, are beautiful and mostly unspoiled by mass tourism, but can be very wet during the monsoon there, which usually runs from late May to the end of October. But the islands will be much quieter and prices lower during the wet season. Phuket, Krabi and the Andaman Coast Glorious beaches, tropical living and beautiful islands. It will usually start raining from mid April to October and November. September and October are the wettest. And when it rains, it pours. The strong south westerly winds usually make the west-facing beaches unsafe for swimming for the duration of the monsoon. Many tourists drown off these coastlines every year. Koh Samui and the Gulf Islands Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand are a triad of popular islands off the coast of Surat Thani, and have their own annual season weather patterns.

At least 50 people were killed over the past three days, according to Indian officials, after intense monsoon rains poured over parts of eastern and northern India. Floods and landslides were triggered by the rains, overwhelming hundreds of villages, sweeping away houses and leaving residents stranded as rescue crews worked to evacuate survivors. The rains also caused a bridge to collapse in India's northern state of Himachal Pradesh, killing two people as a result. I was travelling from Kochi to Kottayam during the last monsoon rainy season. on my way the rain started boring heavily so I stopped my car on the roadside and started quickly record this video. During the first few minutes the rain was pouring very heavily on me and I was not able to properly cover the camera and mic from the rain. Climate change is blamed as the cause of the heavy rain. Recent monsoons have started earlier and have been heavier than usual. This morning there was heavy rain and wind in Bangkok. I decided to have a walk along Sukhumvit Road. Even the main toad got flooded. Rainy Season or Monsoon always begins around the middle of May, but it has been rainging heavy the last few days. Today there where some power outings in the outskirst of the city. While walking in soi 11 I noticed all the street bars there are being removed. Besides heavy rain there was plenty Thunder and Lighting as well. Soi 7/1 had a thick wall of water. It also started to rain with strong winds in the southern parts of Karachi, including Clifton, Kemari and Saddar on July 10. Most areas of Clifton are inundated with almost waist-high water in some areas with other areas are reporting a similar situation. With hardly any traffic on the roads due to the heavy rainfall, commuters struggled to reach their destinations. Highways leading out of the city were also inundated due to excessive rainfall. The Karachi-Hyderabad track of the highway was closed due to flooding. In addition, flood water entered Yar Muhammad Goth from Malir River and residents of the area were instructed by the authorities to evacuate to safer places. At least 120mm of rainfall has been recorded in district south, with areas near the coast reporting higher amounts of rainfall. Moderate rain is likely to continue over the next few days. Karachi has seen an increase in the amount of rainfall it receives per annum over the last few years, with monsoonal anomalies getting more frequent due to climate change.
