When you buy a new iMac from Apple, it can be costly to upgrade the RAM. Upgrading a new iMac from 8GB of RAM to 32GB, for example, will cost you an extra $600 through Apple's website. There is a much more wallet-friendly way to add RAM to an iMac, however: do it yourself. Third-party sites such as Other World Computing and Crucial sell the same amount of RAM for around $150. That's a savings of $450. All you need to do is install it, which Apple has made relatively easy. In this video we walk you step by step through the installation process. At the time, I wasn’t sure the CPU coolers were the same across all 27” models. I have since learned that they are; so if you buy the cheapest 5K iMac, you can do all the upgrades I mention in this video without issue. Footnote #2: This is not an instructional disassembly video. I recommend checking the guides on iFixit. They are well illustrated—provide adequate caution and warning for tricky areas—and have a community section where people provide advice. At the time of this video, there is no updated guide for the 2017 iMac; however, it's very similar to the 2014-2015 A1419 model. The only big difference is the screw placement on the motherboard. Just take your time finding all of the screws (one is hidden through the gold hole in the middle of the board) and you'll be fine. Footnote #3: A little drama that wasn't included in the video is that the first time around, the CPU got bumped out of the socket when I screwed in the cooler, so the CPU wasn't seated correctly and the computer didn't boot. Upon disassembling the machine again, I saw the CPU was out of the socket and partially bent. I bent the CPU back (silicon bends easily without damaging, luckily), reinserted it into the socket, and was more careful when I tightened the CPU cooler the second time. It's easy to wiggle the CPU out of place when installing the cooler, so be careful—and if it feels too hard to tighten the CPU socket, stop—something is wrong. Footnote #4 - My machine's GeekBench results: 🤍 The 27" 5K iMac is a good computer for many; however, to users that want high-end specs, Apple charges way too much money. So this nearly ended badly! DON'T do it! I got a great deal on a nearly new 2019 imac (base model) which a friend had sent away for repair. Unfortunately because of the lockdown period, he was unable to get a repair on this mac for several months, so rather than be without a machine he purchased another. After eventually being repaired he offered me the iMac for a very reasonable £1000. I then got the idea that I should max out this machine as I did previously with the 2015 iMac. However there is always a risk of damaging irreparably the machine in the process, which I very nearly did! The process was nearly identical to the late 2015 upgrade with only some very small differences in the internal components. The screen adhesive is also slightly different so make sure to get the right ones for this 2019 model. So on for the upgrade I installed Intel i9 9900KF processor, these do not have the integrated graphics and are the same chips as used in the genuine i9 iMacs of this generation. There is some evidence they run cooler which given the cooling on the iMac is quite compact, thats defiantly a good thing. More on that in this article here: 🤍 For storage I opted for a 1TB Western digital NVME drive and a Crucial 2TB SSD. Very impressed with the performance of the WD Black drives, and on this model they do not prevent the hibernate feature from working which is a bonus. Updating the late 2015 5K Retina iMac from 8GB of RAM to 32GB of RAM. The preocess is VERY simple and only takes a few minutes. The RAM I used to upgrade is Crucial DDR3L-1600 SODIMM.
