Are you waking up with a headache each morning? According to the Sleep Foundation, one in every 13 people suffer from morning headaches, and they're more common in women than in men. There are a number of causes, as well as some effective solutions.
For more information on migraine or #YaleMedicine, visit: 🤍 Everyone gets headaches from time to time, but migraines are different. For an estimated 15% to 18% of women and 6% of men with migraine, they endure not just intense pain in their head but also nausea; an inability to tolerate light, noise, or odors; confusion; overwhelming fatigue, and more—to the point that they are unable to keep working or be present with family and friends. This inability to function separates migraines from headaches. The good news is that knowledge about them and treatments for them have increased exponentially to the point that most migraine sufferers are able to enjoy meaningful relief that allows them to go about their lives in a fairly normal way. Doctors may prescribe medications, behavioral treatments and lifestyle changes, and even electrical stimulation devices. Learning to distinguish warning signs of an impending migraine from what have traditionally been called “triggers” can greatly improve someone’s ability to manage these episodes. “The understanding of migraine biology and the treatments available have exploded in the last decade; with proper education, consistent use of the tools available can improve the lives of most migraine patients,” says Christopher Gottschalk, MD, a Yale Medicine neurologist and director of Yale Medicine's Headache and Facial Pain Center. “Unfortunately, migraine remains underdiagnosed, undertreated, and underestimated—according to reports, migraine causes more disability than all other neurological conditions combined. But learning to identify the early signs of a migraine attack and intervene quickly and effectively can provide patients with a level of control they never thought was possible,” he says.

In this episode, I discuss the causes and treatments of different types of headaches, including tension headaches, migraines, sinus and cluster headaches, as well as menstrual and other hormone-based headaches. I describe how to distinguish between the different headache types and how to select the right treatment, including prescription-based and non-prescription-based treatments, behavioral and nutrition-based approaches. I also explain the evidence and mechanisms supporting the use of omega-3 fatty acids, high dose creatine, peppermint oil, turmeric, acupuncture and more. Additionally, I touch on traumatic brain injury, the causes of photophobia, aura, and the link between spicy foods and thunderclap headaches. Eliminate your tension headache and neck tightness with these 4 simple exercises you can do right at home! Physical therapy exercises for your neck and posture to eliminate tension headache pain. Read more for links and details! I seem to be treating a lot more patients lately with complaints of tension headaches and neck pain. People are spending more and more time on their computers and cell phones with poor posture and these days seem to be a little more stressful than times have been in the past. Tension headaches are often diagnosed as a headache pain in the head that comes from pain/tension in the neck. Often times these headaches start in the back of the head right at the base of the skull and creep up and over either one half or both halves of your skull. There are many factors that cause these tension headaches. Anything that causes increased strain on the small muscles in the top of your neck can lead to tension and stiffness in this area. The tension/stiffness from these small muscles puts pressure on nerves that exit your cranium right in this same area. The result of this pressure on these nerves is what causes your tension headache pain. The most-common cause of tension headaches that I see is computer/desk jobs. We spend long days seated (something we’re not structurally designed to do anyway), we’ve got laptops and phones that are never at the right height, and we round forward at our shoulders to reach our keyboards and mice. It’s a horrible position to be in for your body; let alone for 8+ hours/day! Luckily, there is a lot of the right stretches and exercises can do to alleviate the tension in these muscles, decrease the pressure on your nerves, and help your headache to feel much better. In this video you will learn four of the best exercises to stretch these muscles and decrease tension headache pain. These are simple exercises that can be done anywhere with no equipment needed. Now whenever I treat anyone for anything in my physical therapy clinic, my goal is always two-fold: 1. Treat the pain to help the patient feel better 2. Treat the cause of the pain so it does not return. That said, my goals with this video are to show you the right stretches to decrease neck tension/pain and the right exercises to improve postural strength. Decreasing neck pressure and pain will help alleviate your headache pain; improving neck/postural strength will keep the headache from returning in the future. Time stamps to each of the exercises is included below for you convenience. Also be sure to check out the videos below the timestamps for additional help with your headache/neck pain and posture. 0:00 Best Exercises For Tension Headaches 0:30 What is a tension headache? 1:02 Why do you get tension headaches? 2:11 Home Exercises For Tension Headaches 2:31 CHIN TUCKS 3:54 CERVICAL ROTATION STRETCH 5:25 UPPER TRAPEZIUS STRETCH 6:24 SCAPULAR PINCHES If you found this video helpful be sure to hit the "THUMBS UP" button above; if you have any questions or comments please leave them in a COMMENT as well. In this headache, the patient feels pressure and pain in the forehead region. Pain can last from 30 minutes to several hours. MOstly this headache occurs because of stress. Stress can be both mental and physical in nature. Fatigue can be the cause of physical stress. While in mental stress, work, family, friends, and relationship problems can be the cause. Migraine Headache A migraine headache leads to pain on one side of the head and neck. This pain can last from 3 hours to 3 days. Patients suffering from migraine headaches may also experience nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to sound and light. Cluster Headache In a cluster headache, the patient feels pain in the area around one eye. The patient also experiences a droopy eye as a result of the pain, and the eye turns red. In addition, tears in the eyes and nasal discharge are also the symptoms. If we do not treat cluster headache, it might last for weeks or even months. Sinus Headache The main cause of sinus headache is sinusitis. In sinusitis, the inflammation in the sinuses occurs Sinuses are the hollow spaces in our head, that secrete thin mucus. This mucus flows into the nasal cavity, moistening and dust-freeing the air we breathe. However, sinus inflammation might occur as a result of an infection or a blockage, which leads to sinus headache. In sinus headaches, pain around the nose is felt in the sinuses. Because sinuses can be found in the cheeks, forehead, and behind the eyes. As a result, the patient experiences pain in all of these areas. This patient also shows symptoms of watery eyes. Fever can also occur. To treat a headache, we must first identify the type of headache. Because each type of headache can be caused by a different reason. Which is treated by doctors accordingly. #TypesOfHeadache #WhatCausesHeadache
