When you use the pen tool to input your MIDI notes, they get quantized and have a static velocity…. that makes it stale. Let me show your two great tricks to making it more “human” using built-in effects in Ableton Live. I use two things all the time. One for Velocity and one for Timing. They are both built into Ableton Live and give greet results adding randomness (humanize) quickly and easily to any MIDI clips you might have. Randomize MIDI Note Velocity First, I use the Velocity MIDI effect to add some randomness to the velocity values of each of the MIDI notes. In fact, there is a preset called “Add Some Random”which does the job! Some times I reduce the Out Low value and the Range to get things a bit less random, but for most things, Add Some Random works like a charm! Ableton Live Video Tutorial | Velocity MIDI Effect to randomize MIDI note velocity Randomize MIDI Note Timing Next, I use a groove. Now, I’m not saying add a groove to your MIDI. While that is useful in many instances, that’s not what we are doing here. In fact, you can add any groove to your MIDI clip. Then set all the values to 0 except the Random value. That I like to set between 20 – 30, depending on how sloppy in want it to be. This adds subtle timing fluctuations to the MIDI notes and it sounds great. It works with any drum sample you have because we're going to add small variations in loudness, pitch, duration, equalization, attack, timing and it's all going to be controlled by MIDI Velocity. Here's an example of a drum loop I made applying this automation. And this is the same drum loop but without the technique you're about to learn in this video: Did you notice how robotic it sounds? It's difficult to come up with an interesting groove if every hit sounds the same, right? By the way, I'm Thales, pop music producer, and I spent a long time creating and tweaking these racks to automate this, and today you're going to download it for free, because I believe it's really going to help make your drums come alive. This technique works wonders for kicks, snares, hi-hats, tom drums, cymbals and percussions. In fact, I've made a different rack for each one of them. The download link is in the description below, but don't just download and leave the video. You need to understand how to use it. And the idea behind this is simple. When a real drummer plays, if they hit the snare harder, it not only sounds louder, higher in pitch, and brighter, but it also lasts longer, and it has a stronger transient than when they hit the snare softly. The same is true for the other drums. So I took this incredible device that comes with Max4Live, it's called Envelope MIDI, and I mapped some parameters from multiple Ableton Live's effects. I'll show you one by one. Now, I'm not even sure if they came up with this device for this purpose, but I was playing with it, and it turned out to do exactly what I needed. This can also be done with the Expression Control device, but I've tested it extensively and it had more latency. Also, if you're in a different DAW, you can still follow this tutorial. Just look for a device that allows you to use MIDI Velocity to control parameters from your audio effects. Alright, let's take a look at my kick rack. To start the chain, there's this Envelope MIDI at full sustain, and no attack, no release and this Velocity button turned on. By clicking on this icon on the top right, you'll see what's mapped to this control. You can even map more stuff. This first thing I mapped was the gain from a Utility effect, which is my favorite for volume automation. That way I can use MIDI Velocity to control volume no matter what device I'm using to trigger the kick. In this case it's a Sampler, but it could be Serum, or any synthesizer. So, higher Velocity, louder hits. The next parameter that's mapped here is the attack in the sampler. When the velocity is at the maximum, the attack is set to zero, so the kick hits hard with the full transient. When the velocity is lower than the maximum, this thing increases the attack in the sampler so the kick takes a few milliseconds to hit it's peak, and the transients are softened. This makes a lot of difference. sheesh, my pronunciation is trash. if you have any questions or I didn't explain things well enough please drop a comment! one of the reasons why people love artists like Dilla, Madlib, and Flying Lotus, is because they managed to really humanize their beats with off grid techniques - 8th swing on the hi hats, early snares, loose kicks, and all other kinds of tomfoolery. in this video I'll show you how to get much funkier and looser off-grid drums in any DAW/sampler, even with cheap ones that don't necessarily have the features to do so, like the korg volca sample and the teenage engineering PO33KO! download the po33 kit: 🤍 if you think my music, videos or mixes are worth buying me a coffee, I'd love to have it :) 🤍 follow me on IG: 🤍 #DILLADAY #JDILLA #JDILLADAY #PO33 #PO33KO! #BEATMAKING #LOFIHIPHOP #12BIT #SOUL #MADLIB #VOLCASAMPLE #SAMPLES #OFFGRID #BEATS #HIPHOP #BOOMBAP #NEOSOUL #SP404

Read on Splice: 🤍 1:05 - FL Studio 8:19 - Ableton Although they can be implemented as an artistic choice, perfectly-quantized drums often sound sterile and lifeless. Humanizing your rhythms can help make them feel performed and achieve that enigmatic feeling we refer to as ‘groove.’ In the video tutorial above, we walk through how to humanize your drums via velocity, timing, and pitch manipulation. Focusing on FL Studio and Ableton, we also explore some DAW-specific tricks for templatizing and accelerating your workflow (if you’re a Logic Pro user, check out our other tutorial on humanization). Humanizing rhythms is a delicate art that strives to strike a balance between accuracy (we don’t want to go so far off the grid that the intended rhythm becomes unclear) and the musicality that’s born from the inherent imperfections of human performance. Furthermore, some rhythmic adjustments can be quite subtle, so diving into humanization can also be a great way to sharpen your musical ear. Do you have any questions on the techniques discussed in the video? Let us know in the comments below. #AbletonLive #FLStudio #musicproduction #musictutorial #productiontutorial #tutorial #splice #electronicmusic #beatmaking #beats #beatmaker #producer #samples #sampling #sounds #samplepack #groovepool #groove
Hey there, I’m Joel Michael and in this video I talk about groove and how to humanize your beats. No more stiff, quantized beats, let’s inject your tracks with feeling and character to make them groove. I will be using FL Studio for the examples but any of these approaches can be used in any DAW. So let's dig in and humanize your drums & make your beats groove in this tutorial! Kick Considerations - So most of the time we’re going to plug the notes in on the grid where we want them. Consider the push-pull effect I talk about in the video and place certain kicks ahead and/or behind the beat a bit. Also, consider velocity to create accent patterns that a human drummer would play. Snare Considerations - I like to stack my snares with a tight attack snare and a more body or sustain snare (obviously each track differs). We will start by plugging in the snare on beats 2 and 4. For this example I want to create the pull now and put the snares ahead of the beat since the kick is a bit behind. Hi-Hat Considerations - Now this is where the real gel of the groove happens and pulls it all together. I’ll start by pulling in straight 16th notes which sounds a bit stiff. So let's start with the accents and change the velocity to emphasize the down beats and de-emphasize the 8ths and 16ths a bit. Don’t want it to be perfect because it’s gotta be a bit human to groove. Then adjust the placement of the hi-hats ahead and/or behind the beat throughout the phrase. Consider making longer loops of 4 or 8 bars to prevent it from sounding like a sterile loop. Other Considerations - Stack in claps (or similar percussion elements) and place ahead or behind the beat a bit to accentuate the push-pull more. You can also adjust the master swing amount to be less/more per each instrument. Sometimes you might use MIDI files that are too rigidly quantized. You want some "feel' to the music. More "authentic" (for what's that worth!! ). Here's how you can "Humanize" (randomize) your "strict to the grid" MIDI tracks.

In this Logic Pro X tutorial James demonstrates one of the most important and least used methods of making music feel human, funky and naturally played. This video demonstrates how incorporating various elements of swing, humanization and quantization can give your tracks a professional feel that also adds longevity to your music production by making it less machine like. By using Groove Templates, James shows how Logic Pro can extrapolate grooves from pre-existing midi and audio files from existing music or famous drum machines and use those grooves to apply them to all or some of the individual elements to your track to help you avoid using straight 16th grid programming.
