NAS Brands in 2021 – Which One Should You Choose? 🤍 Buying your first Network Attached Storage (NAS) device can be a remarkably daunting task! Even for the most technologically knowledgable, a NAS is a very different kind of device than most of the hardware in your environment. At its heart, it is just a computer (like most things are when you break them down to the basics) that is built for a specific task. However, there are numerous elements of a NAS (such as it always being ON, the constant remote accessibility and focus on storage primarily) that set it apart from most other devices, and this IS where a lot of people get a bit intimidated by it. There is always the option of using cloud services, such as DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive and more, but these are often paid monthly subscription services, involve your data being shared across other services and (most worrying of all) leaves your precious data in a position to be used for analytics without your knowledge OR open to hacking because of the sheer size of the target. Add to this the fact that in most cases, a severed connection to the internet means a severed connection to your data, and the appeal of moving away from 3rd party cloud and on to a NAS is pretty clear. The industry of NAS has been in constant growth for over 30 years, with big players like HP, Dell and IBM steadily losing the home and SMB market to the likes of Synology, QNAP and more. The brand diversity in the field of NAS servers has continued to grow right up until 2021, with the benefit that the way you can interact with your data, what NAS devices can do and the price point of this technology being exceedingly affordable (with fully featured solutions WITH storage media arriving as low as £200). You may try to boot up your computer one day, only to be met with an error message telling you that your computer cannot find a device to boot from. You pull out the hard drive, and when you try to power it on your worst fears are confirmed. The hard drive doesn’t spin up. You can’t hear the happy “click” that comes when the read/write heads unpark and position themselves over the platters (this is the “good” click, as opposed to the notorious “click of death”). Instead, your hard drive makes an unusual and repetitive beeping noise. Read more: 🤍 🤍

This is a video that shows you how you can make your HDD's run quieter. There are many solutions out there for doing just that. If you don't have the money for a SSD or simply need alot of harddrive space, this method takes the edge of the noise from the HDD's. A couple of years ago I found a forum thread on a Norwegian forum for computer geeks. The thread described how you can get rid of HDD whine and "ticking" form the HDD's heads. By using cheap O-rings, originally for some plumbing pipes you could get a good result for a very small amont of $$. I've used that method for a couple of years, but recently had to buy a new HDD for Snow Leopard. I didn't have any O-rigs at hand, so I decided that I'd mount it the "normal" way. That is when I realized how well these O-rings actually work. Because, MAN, there was a huge difference. So I bought more O-rings. They cost about $3-4 each. And I decided to share this tip with the world. Youtube, here we come!!!! I borrowed a professional Spectrum Analyzer (portable) to document the difference. There are some screenshots from it at the end of the video. Here is a link to the original forum thread: 🤍 One thing you should be aware of when using this modification is the temperature of your HDD's. In my computer casing there are 2 fans in the front, blowing air over the drives. That keeps them at about 30-35 degrees celsius. In other computer casings you may have to mount the HDD in a 5,25" drivebay, and just keep in mind that HDD's will run a little hotter than normal when you do this. The reason is that normally the HDD transfers some of it's generated heat to the metal it is in contact with. With the O-rings, there is no metal contacting it, so it will run a little hotter. But usually it shouldn't be a problem. If you're worried about it, I recommend using software like Speedfan (or similar) to monitor your HDD's temperature before and after modding. And please don't complain about the quality of the video. My camera sucks, it has a lousy microphone, and I am not very experienced in video editing. And English isn't my native tongue, so don't complain. ;)

However, there are numerous elements of a NAS (such as it always being ON, the constant remote accessibility and focus on storage primarily) that set it apart from most other devices, and this where a lot of people get a bit intimidated by it. There is always the option of using cloud services, sucISh as DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive and more, but these are often paid monthly subscription services, involve your data being shared across other services and (most worrying of all) leaves your precious data in a position to be used for analytics without your knowledge OR open to hacking because of the sheer size of the target. So, today I want to talk about what NAS is, what a NAS can do, and which NAS Brand you should consider buying in 2021. This description contains links to and Amazon.
